Why We Love it

Omega is a brand that needs no introduction, and in addition to their impressive portfolio of steel divers and chronographs, they also manufactured a menagerie of dressier timepieces, including this Omega Memomatic.

This Memomatic is special because it steps outside the boundaries of a “typical” dress watch, which normally would consist of a smaller case size and simple functionality. Instead, this one features a 41mm yellow gold plated cushion case, making it equally wearable for the watch collectors that prefer a more oversized look. Aside from the case, one of our favorite design elements of this watch is the outstanding gold and bronze tone three-piece dial which remains in beautiful condition. Of course that three-piece dial serves a purpose greater than just looking good - the center rings serve as the hour/minute indicators for a mechanical alarm, which can be manually wound and set for personal reminders. This is a lesser-known and charming addition in the realm of mechanical alarm watches, but certainly ranks up there with the likes of the Tudor Advisor or Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox series.

Most importantly, it hasn't been refinished or restored and shows its originality brilliantly.  An alarmingly (get it?) large number of vintage Omega dress watches have been "over restored" in the past 15 years or so, which makes finding an untouched example one a difficult but rewarding task.  The best part about these timepieces is their value - a historic and truly beautiful dress piece for a fraction of the price of many steel sports watches and divers. Consider this a steal of a unique piece that can be had for under 2K.

The Story

Since the Seamaster’s launch in 1948, it has been the vibrant, beating heart of Omega's collection. The key to its longevity, in part, lies in its adaptability. It comes in dive watch models, which were worn by professional divers (and James Bond), or dress models favored by the likes of Mad Men’s Don Draper.

In many ways, the Seamaster can be seen as Omega's counterpart to Rolex’s Datejust. They have many similarities: a waterproof case, in steel or gold, with slim proportions. However, what gives the Seamaster an edge over the Datejust is its affordability.

Whether steel and sporty or gold and glimmering, there’s truly a Seamaster for every taste, every budget, and every wrist.
